# The Story Behind the Lens

I'm P Scotter, a fine art photographer based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Growing up beside the working docks of Leith, I was surrounded by cranes, warehouses, shipyards and the constant movement of a working port. It wasn't somewhere people came to admire, but it was a place full of character, history and honest industry. Looking back, I realise those surroundings quietly shaped the way I see the world. They taught me that beauty isn't always obvious and that every place has a story worth discovering.

Photography gives me an excuse to slow down.

In a world that often moves too quickly, I enjoy taking my time. Rather than arriving with a plan and rushing from one viewpoint to the next, I prefer to explore, observe and simply be present. Most of my scouting is done with a trusted Fujifilm HS50EXR bridge camera. It's travelled countless miles with me and allows me to wander freely without the weight of a full professional kit. If a location stays with me, I'll return with my Nikon D7200 or D850 when the light, weather and atmosphere feel right.

Many of my photographs are made on the second, third or even fourth visit. I believe places reveal themselves over time, and some of the strongest photographs come from patience rather than chance.

I work almost exclusively in black and white because it strips away distraction and allows me to concentrate on what first caught my attention. Without colour competing for attention, light, shadow, texture and form become the language of the photograph. Black and white simplifies a scene, allowing atmosphere and emotion to take centre stage.

Although I'm often drawn to Scotland's coastlines, industrial heritage and forgotten places, I don't see my work as being about a particular subject. I'm just as interested in the human element—a solitary figure in a vast landscape, a quiet moment of reflection or the relationship between people and the spaces they inhabit. Whether I'm photographing an old harbour wall, a windswept beach or someone standing on the edge of the sea, I'm searching for the same thing: an honest photograph that creates an emotional connection.

My photography isn't about creating drama where none exists. It needs to feel real. I want every image to reflect the atmosphere I experienced when I stood there. If a photograph doesn't feel honest, it doesn't become part of my collection.

I believe fine art photography should be approachable. You don't need to understand cameras, photography or art to connect with an image. If one of my photographs makes you pause, sparks a memory or simply encourages you to look at the world a little differently, then it has achieved exactly what I hoped it would.
